ABOUT
HISTORY

In the late 1880s, Juliette Peak Fowler dreamed of building a facility to care for the elderly and orphaned children. She traveled throughout the country researching social service facilities, but died before launching her dream. Her will specified that 15 ½ acres of East Dallas land and a trust fund she had established were to be used for the benefit of elderly women and orphaned children.

The first facility, a home for children, opened in 1904 in Grand Prairie. Harwood Hall, the first permanent structure on the East Dallas property, began housing the elderly in 1911. In 1913 the children's program moved to the East Dallas campus where Juliette Fowler Homes continues to serve those who need care.

The institution is named for Juliette Peak Fowler, who has been described by The Dallas Morning News as «the city's first philanthropist».

Today, Juliette Fowler Homes Inc.'s services have changed as the needs of society have changed. In the last 30 to 40 years the population needing retirement and nursing programs has greatly increased, while the need for group homes for children has diminished.

Fowler operates four residential programs which provide a home and special services for more than 350 residents each day: retirement and assisted living apartments, long-term and skilled nursing care, affordable apartments for the elderly and the mobility-impaired, residential treatment for emotionally-disturbed adolescents, and outpatient counseling for all ages. Fowler accepts Medicare and Medicaid.

Residents enjoy Fowler's beautifully landscaped setting nestled in the heart of Dallas with many amenities, including: swimming pool, fitness center, barber/beauty shops, chapel, libraries, and gazebo. The shops, restaurants and services of the nearby Lakewood community are convenient destinations. Regularly scheduled transportation is arranged for shopping and cultural outings.

Juliette Fowler Homes Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization and operates solely for charitable purposes as outlined by the Internal Revenue Service.

Juliette Fowler Homes Inc. does not discriminate against any person on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or age in admission, treatment, or participation in its programs, services and activities or in employment.
